In her book, Guide to Childbirth, Ina May Gaskin writes about how there are two distinct ways to think about birth. One way is to think of birth as something that a woman does, the other is to think of birth as something that happens to a woman. My goal is to help couples have birth be something that they fully participate in.
This series is designed to help you and your partner plan and prepare for the birth you want. I believe that having a natural, unmedicated birth is totally possible and probable, and is worth the effort for both you and your child, but you have to decide that is your goal and start preparing early. While birth is a natural process, if you wait until you are in labor and just show up in the hospital and expect the nurses and doctors to do it all for you, you are unlikely to have your natural birth.
Pregnancy is a natural part of life and should be a wonderful journey for you, your partner and your child. Knowledge can make all the difference, helping you to be an informed participant in this experience. Preparation can give you insight into what you can do to help your body be the best possible environment for your growing baby and to be ready for your ideal birth. Practice can help you and your partner be ready to work as a team and can make this a bonding experience that strengthens your family’s relationships.
Bradley Birth classes teach the Bradley Method® of Natural Childbirth, a comprehensive approach that prepares parents both physically and mentally by covering nutrition and specialized exercise for the period both before and following birth, couples’ relaxation, guided imagery and massage, strategies for the birth process and beyond, and how to be prepared for the different choices involved in giving birth and early parenting. We aim for our participants to have an unmedicated birth with no interventions unless medically necessary, and find that with this preparation these interventions are needed in only a very small percentage of births. We also promote positive consumerism, in that we are each responsible for preparing well for what we hope to experience in life and for making smart choices and being well informed.
Bradley® class participants tend to be either first time parents looking for a great way to prepare for the birth of their dreams, or parents who are searching for a better outcome after a difficult experience. They tend to be well read people who are seeking out a way to become active participants in their own birth experience. They want to work with their birth providers, but understand that it is not their birth providers’ responsibility, but instead it is the parents’ own responsibility, to get ready for a great birth and to ultimately safeguard their family’s health.
